Wow! Thanks for sharing, Bill. I think if people had your experience with the military, etc., etc. they would have a better appreciation of your perspective, which includes the importance of being: skilled and well-trained, prepared, resourceful, and part of an effective TEAM. A few EOP's are dedicated, but I believe some are involved primarily for the "write-off" and free "training". I was too naive to see it for what it was.

I was very happy to see an article in the Mountaineer Progress about the dumped tires called in by a COP. Very impressive and great PR. I just picked up the paper on the way home and can't wait to read the whole article. Like you've said, EOP's can be out looking for things like the tire thing too.

I'm so glad you're still a part of the EOP's. They are lucky to have you, and I hope they take advantage of your willingness to share your skills, knowledge, and ideas. Have a wonderful weekend!

There are at least three levels of equipment that should be in the field.
Each member should carry personal survival equipment for themselves and
their mount. This means a compass, map, water, first aid packet, some
spares for tack repair in the field. Other items may be at the trailer or
camp, such as multiple days food and feed.

Each task needs communications gear, usually a primary and a backup on top
of the individual gear. If the task is specialized, such as patient
evacuation, additional equipment may be required.

Lastly, there is organization level equipment for use at the base camp or
possibly in the field. This would include laptops, generators, farrier
tools, specialized rescue equipment, power tools, etc.

This is modeled on the Army concept--each soldier carries what he needs to
do his job, the squad carries some more stuff, maybe spread out among the
members or by adding a member just to carry the radio, and so on as the
organization increases in size and scope of operations through platoon and
company.

Under no circumstances should a member be in the field without a minimum
individual capability. Each organization must establish what that minimum
capability is based on its response zone, number of calls, and type of
calls.
