Interesting discussions...many I have heard from different directions,
different activities.

I didn't use a helmet for many years. Girlfriend and horse went down in a
plowed field (alone). Not head injury from fall...her horse stepped on her
head to get up. No helmet, no friend. As it was, she still had a severe
injury.

My husband won't wear one...unless we are on a search. Then he has to because
not only does the helmet protect in a fall, etc. but when we are
busy/distracted during a search, branches, limbs, etc. smack you on the head
- not fun.

I am thinking that we need to find a hat designer to make a 'helmet cover'
out of straw, etc. that will be similar to western design with the oh so
wonderful brim that sheds water and provides shade. THAT is what I miss with
my helmet. It does not shed water like my oilskin used to <grin>.
