The very basics are compass, whistle, personal protective equipment, water, map, two radios and two spare batteries per task [not per rider], paper and pencil, and some spares to fix tack, make a splint, possibly mark a tree.  Boot laces work for this, as does survey tape, and yes, the inevitable duct tape.  Some things do double duty—the bandana can be a bandage or sling, as well as a dust mask for instance.  Some stuff you should always carry when riding—spare glasses if you need them to see, medications for allergies or chronic conditions.  Anything that runs on batteries needs spare batteries and usually should be at least 2 per task.  Compasses don’t need batteries and are always on the correct datum for instance.

If you are using saddle bags you can start to consider other “stuff”.  More elaborate first aid, but build a kit and include what you need in your area: snake bite, splints, lots of 4x4’s, tape, whatever.  You will never have too much water along.  My bags have reasonable capacity and a cantle bag so I carry a set of store flat, nesting, cervical collars, a disposable yellow blanket, rain gear, a chain/nylon  lead, an OB kit, and carrots in the cantle.  One side has horse stuff, the other first aid.

If I had to pay for it I would trade the GPS in on more survival gear, like a cheap set of fence pliers, a spare halter and lead, some garbage bags.

I am just looking for ideas about what everyone else carries on a mounted search.  Every time I bring this up, we start looking at a list and it ends up bigger than Ben Hur.  So I think if I can give some examples of what others take, it may keep things a bit more level for us.  Currently we take out a very basic first aid kit, 1 radio, GPS and map.  I have been pushing for a blanket to be rolled and carried and a couple of lashings at least, with a proper first aid kit.

Looking forward to some suggestions

Thanks
