The usual task team is 3 at a minimum. If there is an incident you either
have two to carry the third or one to go while the other cares for the
third.

The other factor is skills. You need a local knowledge person who really
knows the terrain and landmarks, a navigator, a clue or tracker person, a
communications person, and a first aid/medic person. Usually the SAR Team
provides the tracker/navigator/communicator/medic person or persons. We
try to send out 2 radios and spare batteries with each task with SAR people,
at least one local, and sometimes a dog. We started using 3 when we were
doing ground pounding with dog people. The dog people never had
communications or infrastructure so we started using two flankers, one local
and one of our people with a radio, a map, and a first aid kit.

Three is a minimum number, unless you don't have 3 persons available.
