Subject: [MSAR] MSAR "equipment" costs

I've been curious for a while about some of the other MSAR rider's equipment, thanks for sharing. Since I've moved to Maine, I've seen that the average price for boarding is about $ 300 and up per horse. Fortunately, Ive been able to find a barn where I can trade work for those services, as with 2 horses it would quickly become prohibitively expensive for me. I 've been around horses for about 22 years, and worked on a few " dude ranches " over the years. If it weren't for caring for them myself, I don't think I could afford to keep more than one. Both of my geldings are grade horses, general purpose mutts 15 hh and 16 hh respectively.
As for gear, both are in hackamores. One is mechanical, the other is an 8 plait braided rawhide bosal. He also gets a 22 ' braided horsehair mecate rein as well. When I work him down to a bosalito, the other gets this bosal and gets rid of the mechanical hackamore. One rides with a roper saddle, and the other has a reproduction 1/2 seat Hope saddle with cut down skirts. It weighs in around 25 pounds or so, minus the saddlebags and canteens. With a breast collar, I find that I can still drag things with a rope dallied around the horn with the lighter saddle, as long as I keep my butt in the seat to hold the saddle down.
Jim
