I have been transplanting zucchini and cucumbers for the past 3-4 years.  I plant them in 50's, as other have said also.  I try to transplant them out 10 to 12 days AFTER germination. I fill the trays with a good potting mix, water well, poke a hole with the end of a sharpie and drop a seed in each hole and lightly firm and water again.  My 4 girls help me plant them.  They seem to enjoy this and it is really easy for them too do. The seeds are big enough that they don't have a problem doing it.   I have started them under lights, but they tend to get leggy. So, I start them and as soon as I see one seed emerging, I take the whole flat out to the high tunnel and put it in an aisle.  I don't have a greenhouse, so the aisles pull double duty as my green house.  I have tried cucumbers in 72's, but the only ones I had luck with was H-19 little leaf. They dont take up as much leaf space.  50's are much better.

The best way to get them out for me is to soak the tray really heavy and then they seem to pop out. I always have an old butter knife to coax the stubborn ones out.

I also do this with Okra and plant it into black plastic.  A little more work, but a well spaced weed free crop saves time in the long run.

Subject: [Market-farming] Starting Squash

I started starting summer and winter squash in large peat pots several years ago. It seemed to be the only way I could have reasonable transplant success.

I've seem to be hearing that other people have success transplanting squash started in 50's plastic trays.

Boy, would that same me a lot of time, potting soil and dollars!

Anyone have luck doing squash transplants from 'small' cell plastic trays? And cucumbers, too?

Thanks
