| Richard, reread your original post.  You could have been
more tactful.  It did sound like a huge "putdown" of the person asking the
question.  She admitted whe was "clueless" about this, but we really don't
know how she defined clueless. She have higher expectations than some of
us.  It was not that you questioned her use, it was the "tone" of the
message.  We are getting into a busy season and write things quickly, and
these things happen.  Let's move on and be somewhat careful of our mood
when reading our email. Beth Spaugh Rehoboth Homestead, Peru, NY Farm Fresh Food Club CSA - http://rhomestead.com  Become a Fan on Facebook Garden fresh vegetables,

I find it troubling that when I question the practice of using an amendment
without knowing about its impact that I am, in a manner of speaking, condemned
for in some way criticizing "questions" or discussions. There are LOTS of things in agriculture that I am unfamiliar with and would
never dream of doing something that could impact my land or my business without
thoroughly researching it and asking questions.  If I did do something ill
planned I would expect someone to tell me about it. My point is, that regardless of how new or practiced at something someone
is, sometimes its CRITICAL to ask these questions PRIOR to doing something.
I am not being critical of the question.  I would NEVER dream of
criticizing dissemination of information.  The fact that lime is benign and
forgiving in this case only means that they are no repercussions from acting
without knowledge. If anything the criticism leads to knowledge and might get them to think a
bit before making a mistake when it is far more important. I shudder to think what would happen if someone were to use something that
had far more impact, such a pesticide, herbicide, or fungicide.  Or
different types of nematodes, or cover crops.  The list goes on an on.
Fortunately most of those things impact the ground being worked but some
can have far ranging results down stream.  If not for the farmer then for
the farmer's neighbors. You should praise all questions, but drive home that we ALL need to ask
those questions and understand what we are doing BEFORE we act.  Everything
moves down hill and we, as farmers and gardeners need to be responsible for
knowing as much as we can.  We certainly expect other industries to do
that. Richard Stewart Carriage House Farm North Bend, Ohio An Ohio Century Farm Est. 1855 (513) 967-1106 |
