Title: Re: [Market-farming] -Report Marmorated Stink Bugs
Burkholders from Va Association for Biological Farming are forwarding this message.

Recently, USDA ARS entomologist Ted Rogers contacted me regarding a new exotic pest from Asia, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), which has been causing serious damage to tree fruit and other horticultural crops in the midAtlantic region.   It apparently has no siginficant natural enemies in our region; it does have a couple of parasitoids in China that are now undergoing study in quarantine - if effective and safe, these beneficials may be available in a few years.

Ted is organizing a task force of farmers and researchers to identify practical, organic (NOP-compatible) controls for the BMSB.
How You Can Help:
If you have seen, or think you have seen, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in your fields, gardens, or house, please let both of us know by contacting:
        Ted Rogers <Ted.Rogers AT ars.usda.gov>, 202-720-3846
        Mark Schonbeck <mark AT abundantdawn.org>, 540-745-4130

How do you know if this new invader has arrived on your farm?  It looks a lot like the common Brown Stink Bug, but is somewhat larger (up to 3/4 inch), and has light colored bands or striations on legs and antennae.  It also has a distinctive habit of coming into people's homes, much like the Harmonia lady beetle (also Asian).
Two good web links on BMSB, with nice closeup photos of the critter are:

        Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Marmorated_Stink_Bug

Please let us both know if you have seen this insect, and whether and how much damage it has caused to your crops.
