I second everyone who pointed out that yard long beans (asparagus beans) are slow to get going, and need heat. We are just now getting sensible quantities from ours in central Virginia (zone 7). We like the Purple-podded Asparagus Bean from Southern Exposure. They are much easier to find in the vines than green beans, they are very eye-catching, and best of all, they keep their color when cooked. Very beautiful in stir-fries, cut into one inch lengths.
