August is rough in this part of the country too!  We had three or four 18 foot car trailers stacked high with melons at one of my markets last week. When the market was over, it didn't look like they sold many, but I know they did.

I am ok with a slower August, it gives me down time to get everything planted for the fall/winter and gives me time to start school back up again.  September rolls around and things are growing again and I can keep up.

In August I push my jellies much harder.  When I have alot of produce, they are in the back corner, available, but not pushed hard. In the fall, I give samples and set out 20-30 jars and set up a larger display.  I guess it works, because I sell lots of jelly during this time.

We can, and do grow southern peas. If the yard long beans taste like peas, then they will sell. It would be nice to actually have something on the market tables this time of year.
I got a chance to walk through our market Saturday morning, and we have a glut of watermelons and cantaloupes. Truckloads. Out of the 30 or so vendors we have nearly everyone of them had a table full of melons and not much else. So, I'm doing my usual August thing of what can I grow to keep my tables full? Something other than melons?
We had okra, tomatoes, a tiny bit of squash, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, and potatoes, southern peas, and very small amount of green beans that we are trying to grow under shade cloth.
I think I hate August.
