do I need to replace the whole line, or is there a way to stop the

If it's a big hole: cut it at the hole and insert a splice (in-line connector). We always keep some on hand. (When the drip line finally gets too many holes to be worth bothering with, salvage the splices before throwing the line out; they're nearly always reusable.) The second item on this page is an example:

If it's a tiny hole: multiple wraps of electric tape may get it under control. Start several inches before the leak and spiral the tape around, as tight as you can get it with the line under pressure, and overlapping it on each loop of the spiral; continue till you're a few inches past the leak on the other side; if necessary add another layer working back in the other direction. This may not stop the leak entirely but will probably get it down to the point at which it's only putting out as much water as an emitter hole would.
