I have had good luck with the light-duty black plastic mesh that is seven feet tall (Deer-X is one brand).  The deer could go through it if they wanted, but they don't know that.  At least they didn't for the first three years I used it.  Last summer one of the dirty rotten scoundrels apparently found that he, I think it was a he, could rip it down.  After fixing it four times in a week, I gave up..  This year I am going for a double electric fence.  I hope they get a few good jolts from it.  Bwahahahahahaha.
