You might want to buy shop lights that have electronic ballasts that use much less electricity and so cost less to operate. They also put less CO2 in the atmosphere.

If using common "shop lights" from the hardware store, some have a ballast and some dont, you can tell by the weight while still in the box, those without are only a few ounces, those with are a few pounds. IMO the ballasted ones work longer.

I'm not sure of exactly what you're saying, but it sounds like you're talking about fluorescent lights not needing a ballast, but that you prefer the ones that have them? Fluorescent lights absolutely *need* a ballast to work. Or are you just talking about whether the ballast is sold as a part of the bulb, or instead part of the fixture? If you're buying in any kind of large scale then the ballasts are usually part of the fixture, because then they're easily replaceable, and the ballast will outlast quite a few bulbs, so it's cheaper to replace the ballast separately from the bulbs. If I've completely misunderstood you then I'm sorry.

Tubes are what comes with the light, or what is on sale; a cool white and a warm white in each fixture is recomended by some sources but I never saw much difference. Special "grow lights" are a deed to the Brooklin Bridge.

My understanding was that the grow lights give off more of some parts of the invisible light, but that it would still help the plants. I've never used one, though, just the regular tubes, of whatever color was already there, and they seemed to work just fine.
