Add me to the fan list of transplanting spinach seedlings...can definitely insure a better crop when direct seeding is problematic.  I have started flats in the greenhouse early then set out those plants to get a jump on spring harvest.

I am going to try the method below for a second pea harvest-next season.  Great idea! (although that shade cloth comes a little dear.)

Shawnee, zone 5, a little rain today finally.  It's not the amount of precipitation that counts, it's the timing.  3 inches in 2 days and then nothing for nearly four weeks.  sigh.

I've grown all my spinach from transplants for many years.

And here's something to try- I plant snow & sugar snap peas the first week of August when it's hot. I get the seed to germinate in beds by planting, watering real good to cool the soil and cover the bed with short plastic pipe hoops covered with 85% shade cloth, held on by spring clamps. I can set them up in about 10 mins.

I overhead water every day for 3 or 4 days (morning & noon) to keep the soil temp. low. I take the mini-shade housings down when the first seeds start germinating. Might work for spinach.

Also, I cover seeds with sifted compost and get a higher and faster rate of germination. Research has shown that humic acids speed germination.
