UC157 is a pretty old California variety; I planted some about 25
years ago. The newer Jersey varieties are generally thought to be
superior. "Purple Passion" is a good specialty crop. "Purple
Passion is several weeks later than UC157 or the Jersey varieties.

I haven't heard of "Grande".

You don't necessarily have to mow to pick in the Fall. A few days
after a rain in the Fall I start looking for asparagus. Though
pickings will be meager, it's better than no asparagus and it doesn't
stress your planting as much.
