Carla, check out the above research for mid-west production if you already
haven't.

UC-157 is a more heat tolerant variety. We have it, and Jersey Giant in our
spring planting, and the Jersey Giant out yields UC-157, but when it starts
getting hot, the UC-157 will keep a tighter spear tip. It can get up to
about 11" tall before it starts to fern out. The Jersey Giant will start to
fern out at about 7-8". At least for us here. If you picked your patch in
the spring, I wouldn't mow it off now for picking. The rows we are picking
are rows we did not pick in the spring. And, you have to mow off, and pick
and then let the asparagus fern out again, and have enough time to regrow
before a freeze.
The only place I have found for asparagus seed for UC-157 is in California
and they only sell it by the pound. About 200 dollars per pound. We don't
need a pound to do the half acre we want to put in but.... I think the place
is California Asparagus Seed and Transplants, a Dr. Brian Benson. You can
google and find out more, I'm sure.
A resource on a variety trial that mentions Grande is Carl Cantaluppi from
NCSU.
The response at our market to the fall asparagus is amazing. We really wish
we had more to sell.
The down side is: we are picking every day. Which we have to do in the
spring as well, but at that time of year that is all we are picking. Right
now we are still picking the usual summer stuff, fall broccoli, winter
squashes and pumpkins, and now asparagus. It's been tough trying to get it
all done.
When we put in the planting for fall and when it is ready to pick 3 years
from this spring, we will have to do something different. What, I'm not
sure, but there is no way we could be picking a half acre of asparagus right
now. Something will have to go!
As for not mowing the asparagus off, that is called mother stalk culture.
Google it to find out more.
Hope this helps,
Carla
