I have chicks that were born about the 3rd week of May. They, too, are now
looking like chickens. I have just purchased grower feed, the food between
chick starter and layer pellets. I have one last bag of starter crumbles, so
I am mixing it with the grower crumbles (actually pellets, only smaller than
the layer pellets) to get everyone used to it. I have fifty chicks, all
females and all future layers. They will be added to my flock to replace the
hens as they slow down in production later this fall.

We have experienced some of the same problems with the white this year as
well, but I feel it has been the fact that it has been so cool and wet in
our area. We have Zinnia's planted on black and some on white this year
and zinnia's on the black are twice as tall and producing a lot better
bloom.
Don't think I will use it again on them. Seems to work on our lettuce
transplants, and a lot other things so go figger???????????

Black provides significant soil and air warming around the plant. White will
keep soil cooler but will reflkect light back onto foliage. They have very
different effects on plants because they respnd very differently to a
primary plant input; light. Your observation, Phil, makes sense when you
think about different requirements of different plants. Some like it hot,
some like it cool.

Hi,

My chicks are about 2.5 months old, and have all their feathers and are
beginning to look like chickens. (just a bit mini). We got 1/2 pullets, 1/2
males, but haven't separated them yet (about 100 total). We're going to use
pullets as layers, and males for meat. They're all still eating starter feed
(alongside foraging). When can I feed them broiler pellets and layer
pellets? And I'm assuming I have to separate them before I change their
feed, yes?

Thanks ,

Makenna
