Liz, I hated to chime in about my good luck too. I haven’t fenced for two years and had practically any deer predation. For several years I fenced with 12’ poles leaning outward with three strands of hot wire and several strands of fishing lines on top of that plus peanut butter in foil all around. I switched from a BCS tiller to a large pto driven one and found it difficult to fence; so I didn’t. I keep waiting for those long legged rodents to do their thing, but have been lucky so for. I have plenty of deer that cross my garden area, but less so while in production.

I have lots of clover surrounding the crops; maybe this helps. I honesty don’t have a clue. I’m pretty sure that I lost some pumpkins last year to deer during a drought, so I will remove them from the field as soon as, this year.

Don’t hate me,

I have  no clue why we don't have more deer issues, they walk right through/past the garden daily.  We have a family of 4 living in a little wooded area within site of the house and at times have seen up to 8 in various places on the farm.  So far they've managed to eat/taste/try 4 cabbage leaves and left 1/2 of one of those unfinished.  I know it isn't because our stuff doesn't taste good ; )).  I can only suspect that because we have a dog, and the hayfields surrounding us for great grazing, and that there are active feeding coyotes in this valley may be why.  I really don't want to have to bother with deer fencing as it would be near impossible with these steep hills.  my heart goes out to those who have to deal with this...funny/ironic those of you closer to populated areas have more problems than us living out in the country.
