Around here farmland rents for 99 to 120 per acre.  I know, talking with folks in our Cincinnati locavore group that there are a few people charging up to 650.00 per season per acre in some really rare cases.

In all of our hay baling we simply trade service of mowing a property at least twice and in return the property owner lowers their cost of maintaining open ground with no tree growth and rating their land use as AG for CAUV.  Which for a hilltop property located near a gold course and a couple developments is a huge tax savings.  So all our hay baling is pretty much rent free.

Cincinnati has started an urban farm program for several of its vacant lots and I am not too sure what the cost there is outside the need for a certain level of liability insurance which probably runs around couple hundred dollars a year.

Land rental is a HUGE variable from region to region and state to state and depends a lot on proximity to population centers.  In our current economy though things are changing.  Not too sure where they are headed either.

Cheers and good luck!

It has been a long time since we posted but keep up with everyones helpful advice and successes. Figure many of you on the board can help us with this situation.

We are in Middle Tennessee, starting our 6th year of market farming. Currently farm 2 acres and have the opportunity to lease 5 acres about 30 minutes outside of town. We have never leased before and want to pay the man a fair price for the land; what is the going rate for leasing land? It has water access and under lock and key.

Thank you in advance for your advice.
