Tomatoes will respond to topping by pushing lateral branches, which will grow
out and produce just like the leader shoots. You can top the plants, let the
laterals (like suckers) begin to push out, then select a couple on each
leader shoot and remove the rest. If you do it low, they will grow up within
the cage, or can be trained into the cage. If the leaders are done producing,
you can strip the remaining foliage on them once the new shoots start to
produce foliage. The new foliage will be more effective in supporting the
plant and the new fruit clusters.
