Toni,
I am managing about 700 plants organically, by hand. Here is the basic schedule:
Early Spring - Clean all the alfalfa out of the floor of the hay barn and mulch the asparagus with it. Soon, the grasses and weeds will begin to grow. After a good rain/snowfall when the weather is warming (early April here) till the top few inches of the soil then lay down drip and mulch heavily with straw. By mid-may the asparagus is going nuts. Keep laying down mulch until Asparagus is done. Then I have interseeded sunflowers and dill and let it come up. I only seed these the first year of the asparagus bed. They come back after that. Toward the end of the season, I run the chicken tractor over these beds. Fall, lay down composted manure and mulch with straw for the winter. Works very well for me.
Good luck,
Shelly Elliott

Greetings, the List!
Since moving to our farm 6 years ago, we've had great success with
our small patch of 125 plants, prompting me to wonder about putting in
alot more, toward a perennial crop! It's one vegie in this area of
traditional variety that folk actually will buy. We've had no pest of
disease problems thus far. I am wondering if anyone here grows such
using organic methods and what do you do toward weed control on a large
planting? I do not have heavy equipt and am pretty much a one-gal
operation! Do you think it's doable?
Thanks,
Toni
