In case you are keeping track of this: we did not water again
yesterday as the ground is very muddy. This morning we have about 1%
of the onions moved, many of them in piles of 3-4 onions. Once the
roots are established, the movement stops (thank heavens!)

Right now with my greenhouses heated to 60 degrees at night and outdoor
temps averaging between 25-35* its costing me $300 per 1000 sq. ft per month
for oil heat. I would say that 72* nights are excellent if you can afford
it. Going hotter than 72* at night will not improve or speed up vegetable
plant growth... Bob.

I grow a variety of vegetables and start the seeds indoors.
Once they have germinated, they are in the room temperatures
at our house: 60 F in the daytime, 55 F at night. They all
thrive.

Prior to germination, I keep most of my seeds at 75-80 F (by
means of two mini-electric greenhouses).

Allan, maybe you just figured it out? Earthworms? Maybe not pulling them
simultaneously.

1. Sometimes the clusters are actually formed by the tops of the
onions being pulled into (apparently!) holes about the size of an
earthworm hole. The greens most definitely fill the holes, so it's
impossible for me to understand what could be pulling THREE sets by
their tops simultaenously into the ground without indication of where
that 'something' is getting back into the ground after setting up the
sets for 'pulling.'

We keep ours at 80 during the day, and 55 at night.

A day or two ago I found in my mail this rather intriguing advertisement
from Saltsburg, PA for a stand up bulb or large seed planting tool made
from--one inch PVC pipe. Hmm! Looks like it might work for some things.
Garlic? Has anyone used this thing? It's not that expensive, around $40
and with shipping tacked on a little under $50. With all of the scrap one
inch PVC pipe lying around my place I see another rainy day shop project
coming up. They provided a website in the ad www.standnplant.com but it
didn't work for me. I was more successful googling "Stand 'N Plant" and I
got some pictures like the ones in the ad.

Reading these responses with interest. This is our 3rd year with heated
greenhouse. We keep our thermostat at 40, which is as low as it goes, and it
seems to kick on at about 50. Our purpose has been to keep things from
frosting, but I wonder if it would pay to start plants later, wait later to
turn the heat on, and then keep it warmer to accelerate growth. We have not
turned it on yet, but I will run out of inside light space within a few days
(depending on how quickly stuff germinates). We have not done bedding
plants, just starts for our market garden. This year I am doing some hanging
baskets and deck containers, and will probably have some extras as bedding
plants. Our main farmers market doesn't start until mid-June. I am going to
another market this year which opens mid-May, but they already have several
folks doing begging plants. The plants for our own use have always been
plenty big, or too big, even kept just above freezing at night.

First year was in a small 14 x 20 hoophouse with a salamander on a
thermostat. Then we built the 27 x 96 hoophouse. Last spring we draped
plastic about 1/4 of the way down and just heated the one end. This year we
are heating the whole thing, with salad greens in most of it. DH doesn't
think we saved much by partitioning it (though we only used about 125
gallons of oil) and I have cool season crops in the ground in most of it so
I hope keeping it warmer will accelerate that growth enough to pay for the
fuel.

What I want is an insulated chamber with bottom heat for starting plants -
it would save a lot of fuel and give good light. It would also reduce house
mess from watering and rotating flats of seeds and seedlings among the 16
flourescent lights. By the way, anyone have any experience using the compact
fluorescents instead of long tubes?
