While we are on this subject, I have a question. I use a microwave a lot. It saves a lot of time. I have cattle and sheep and I freeze extra colostrum for orphans and more. Directions from veterinarians say very clearly, "Do not thaw or reheat in the microwave"
It has given me second thoughts about using it to cook or even reheat food. If it destroys all of the antibodies etc. in colostrum does it not do the same in other food?

Re:Delicata in Saran Wrap for lunch

Hi Margaret,
With baby birds, we don't heat the food in a microwave when hand-rearing due to the tendency of a microwave to heat unevenly, thus the possibility of burning the baby's gullet due to hot spots. I'd be more likely to think this is the reason not to thaw colostrum in the microwave, as well as the fact that antibodies are huge protein molecules that are very sensitive to overheating from any source.

From http://ianrpubs.unl.edu/foods/g1508.htm:
A microwave oven may be used for warming baby food. Heat a few seconds and let the food stand a short time before serving. Stir food thoroughly because hot spots can be created. Food may feel cool to the touch but be hot in the middle.

From http://www.verybestbaby.com/content/article.asp?section=fb&id=20019281542581575717469#Q3:
Q: Why does it say on the label not to use the microwave to warm formula?
A: Heating a bottle of formula in the microwave is not recommended because microwaves create hot spots that may burn your baby's mouth and throat.

IMO, microwaves are like anything--safe if you use them right, hazardous if you don't.

Bill
