Hey, folks--

I'm returning to this list after an extended absence, so forgive me in advance if I should lurk a bit longer before speaking up, especially regarding an issue that some may consider off topic.

But having made my disclaimer: Does anyone else find it ironic that recommendations are being made for purchases at Sam's Club, a.k.a. Wal-Mart? I've been under the impression that a good part of what makes for successful market farming is building relationships with your customers, whom you then educate in the ways of eating seasonally and locally, and that such a sustainable way of eating and living may cost more than cheap "food" found at the supermarket.

Shouldn't we try to practice what we preach a little more consistently by supporting our local retail outlets rather than superstores like Sam's Club and Wal-Mart, both of which are largely responsible for doing some serious damage to our rural economies? (Granted, the argument's harder to make when the product being bought is a cell phone rather than farm produce, but. . . .)

Just my two cents. Thanks for letting me raise the question. I don't want to stir up a list brouhaha, especially if I'm pigheadedly off topic--you all know where your DEL key is, right?

Dawn
