Emily,
We've had both gas and diesel tanks on our farm as far back as I can
remember. As you explore your options you may want to also check with which
ever department in your state oversees fuel tanks. Ours happens to be DEQ,
but there are also EPA rules involved. It might also be a good idea to talk
to your insurance carrier. They can be very particular about where tanks
and fueling sites are located. And the size of the tanks comes into play as
well.

Our own experience with moving fuel tanks and the fueling site was rather
frustrating. The insurance company wanted them moved farther away from
other structures, and the newer state and federal standards were not being
met with our old site. We tried to utilize EQUIP funds to cost share our
new set up, but spent alot of time listening to DEQ and EPA trying to
decide which set of rules should prevail. Anyway, we do have a new site
utilizing self contained, diked tanks on a cement pad with a roof over the
tanks. In the end I'm glad to adequately protect groundwater, but what a
pain. Just thought you should know.

I have always had a tank, but I am at a new small farm that has always
filled with % gallon tanks from the gas station. This seems awful to me,
but my investigations into getting a tank yielded an expense of over $500.
for a 290 gallon tank (smallest size). Are there smaller sizes out there?
