I have a 250 or 300 gallon diesel tank. It is mostly a matter of
convenience. I get it filled only once in 8-12 months. I'm not aware
of any regulations or insurance issues. And, I'm not going to ask.
Fuel tanks ARE very common on farms/ranches around here. I don't
recall the tax situation, but Texas taxes are $.40-.50/gallon as are
Federal taxes. I can (and do) buy dyed, un-taxed or partially taxed
diesel for off-road use. Or you can keep track of tax paid and apply
for a refund. The regulators have bee known to test for dyed fuel at
gatherings of farmers or ranchers. Like at a livestock auction.
I have four diesel tractors and a wide assortment of diesel trucks, but
I am not tempted to put dyed diesel in my trucks even though none of my
trucks have ever been tested for dye.

Here is a diesel safety anecdote: Last week, I was working a tractor
in some brush and my fuel cap came off from being scraped by brush.
Before I knew the cap was gone, I hit a bump and diesel splashed all
over my very hot exhaust pipe. Had it been gasoline, it would probably
have ignited and caused a great deal of excitement and damage.
