Paul,
Yes you need to cook them before cooking them. Soak the beans for a few hours (if these were harvested this season skip this step) than dump the water and put the beans into a cooking pot, cover with 1 to 2 inches of water and bring to a boil and simmer for one hour. Dump the water and the beans are ready for cooking. This also gets rid of most of the beans musical properties.
This will improve the flavor immensley but they still may not taste like the canned beans.
