Don't forget the USDA Certification Cost Share Program. Almost all the
states are participantly this week. It will re-imburse up to 75% of the
certification costs, capped at a maximum of $500/yr. The money is
dispersed through your state program, so be sure and contact them. Here in
MO we starting sending out money the middle of May. And we will be
certifying for $100 minus the 75% cost share, so it will cost the MO
organic growers a total of $25, if they certify with the state program.

Farm in Iron County. Right now we live in the Southwest Side of Chicago
where we have been gardening for 20 years in raised beds so we are
confident we can at least feed ourselves. My plans for the farm are more
ambitious. We will have an on-farm roadside stand and plan to have small
fruits and vegetables, herbs, hay, and grain. I will farm organically, but
I don't know if I am willing to pay for the certification.

You don't need certification if you sell less than $5000 per
year, although you must still comply with all the
requirements of course.
