We just had an experience that confirms your observation. We have several flats of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower seedlings in an unheated hoop house. Two nights ago we had a very cold clear night - the cauliflower seedlings now look burned and are dead, but the others are all fine despite another night of similar cold. Anyone know why cauliflower would be more sensitive?

Especially cauliflower. You would think the 3 would act pretty much the same in the same conditions, but I have noticed that cauliflower is a lot more sensitive to its environment in a number of ways. As one example, last year we put in our first planting somewhat early and we were burned (is that the right word) with a fairly hard late frost. the cabbage and broccoli were not affected but the cauliflower suffered heavy loss, even though they were in the same general area.

Hi Jerry
It is OK to leave the entire plant. We have found that the top most portion of the plant needs to be pruned back in the spring, anyway, due to winterkill. Did your co op win one of the ag grants? I saw quite a few approved for herb products and production. Several were in cooperation with Frontier Natural Products.

Regards to the list:

We use cattle panels as hoops. Hubby wires them to metal fence posts,
but Phil in Iowa says just to dig a trench for each end of the panel. I
have a minivan, which, by the way, has a blown head gasket.
