Thanks for this information, Carl.

I tried this a couple of seasons ago with lettuce. I felt that the root development suffered, making for weak transplants. ("You aren't raising them to live in water, are you?" my master gardener asked me) Do you not have this problem? Thanks -Allan

Barb,

When I asked about 2' spacing, you wrote:
Depends on what zone you are in. Our lavender plants are fine with 18"
spacing after 3 years. I don't think our summers are hot enough to produce
bigger plants.

I reply:
I'm in zone 3/4. This is all actually in preparation for a project that our
herb coop is undertaking to see how well lavender
does here (Minnesota). I thought closer spacing would be OK, but others said
2'. Maybe I'll try both.

We have a greenhouse grower who is starting the plants. Then 3 or 4 of us
will plant them (I'm looking at starting off with
200). Finally, another member has all the equipment to process the oil.

The market
for oil and fragrance is pretty tight with the French dominating the market.

We already have a buyer who wants all we can grow/process.

When in full flower, cut the flower stalk just below the first pair of
leaves. In the fall, we leave about 2/3 of the plant to over winter, any
less and we have found that the plant doesn't survive

If we're not harvesting the first year, should we leave the entire plant to
overwinter?

Thanks for the websites.

Yours,
Jerry Ford
