Caryl,

Your post deserves a public reply because you are a newcomer
to this list.

My early comments to Rick W. avoided directly criticizing
his web site, but he accurately surmised that I had visited
it and came away with opinions as to its potential value
as a marketing tool. He then asked a direct and pointed
question to which I gave an honest and pointed reply.

Rick W. and the rest of the list is entitled to ask for no more
than that -- an honest reply. You may ask for, but do not expect
to receive, free advice on something as specific as your
farm web site or a specific advertising plan or campaign.

I am not asking people here to ship me free food. ;-)

When a "one size fits all" answer is available, pertinent
and appropriate, I provide it. Otherwise, marketing is
something for each farmer to decide about. When you
need an expert on marketing and advertising be prepared
to pay for it, just as you might for legal, tax or engineering
assistance. In Rick W.'s case, I suggested he seek local
assistance. I was and am very serious that he seek
professional help with his whole marketing approach.
It is not an insult, it is my professional opinion.

People monitoring this list in hopes of picking up one
"grand stroke" idea that will solve their marketing problems
in a single shot are unlikely to be rewarded with such a
benefit. Marketing and advertising do not work that way.
You would be better off reading marketing and advertising
classics for what you might gain.

If members of this list find my average contributions on the
subjects of marketing and advertising unhelpful, I will be
happy to unsubscribe and use the time doing other things.

My comments on marketing or advertising may not always
come across as "polite" but they are always honest.
Ask for no more than honesty when it comes to pursuits
as important as M & A, because of the effects they have
on your business.

Please don't feel insulted if you did not get the answer or
reply you had hoped for. The answer you got was honest.
