Yes I do have access to tin roof. How big a roof surface do I need?

a few more questions?

I have two ponds on our farm. One 4 ac.and another 5 ac. They are both
fairly shallow 1 to 8 ft.and have a large amount of lily pads and vegetation
in them. They are both watershed feed and have a good population of aquatic
wildlife, i.e. fish, frogs, ducks etc.

1) is it non economic to pump into the pond and then pump out of the pond?
We are growing on two fields this season, a 4 ac. and a newly cleared 6 ac.
We have one well for irrigation that produces iron oxide water at about 18
gpm. As a backup, I have a 12 gpm electric pump and pressure tank system
that I have used to overhead water via sprinklers fixed atop T posts.. FYI I
have a swimming pool media filter that uses dicanateous(sp?) earth as the
media. I purchased this filter for T tape usage. Got too busy last year to
set up the filter.

2) IF I pump the iron oxide well water into the pond via a sprinkler etc,
will I have a good chance of not having iron oxide residue on the pond
surface? It will not be very hard to try!

3) I have asked extension folks, but never got A good answer. In general,
does "living" pond water have any sort of nutritional value advantage above
well water when irrigated. It is my understanding that pond algae cannot be
compared to cold water kelp etc as the kelp advantage is supposedly due to
the abundant minerals found in the ocean.

The volume is too small to adequately aerate in the tank. Is there a barn
roof that could have a gutters in stalled to accommodate the 12gpm flow rate
so that the water could be pumped to the gable and allowed to run down the
roof back to the tank?

Using 12 gpm as a flow rate, how about 720 gals. per hour for about 12 hrs.
per day. The size of this stock tank is about 10' in diameter and perhaps 3'
tall(?).

To add a bit of engineering flavor, the greater the surface area, the
greater the gas exchange rate. There are many ways to accomplish this, but
aeration is the least effective although may be the most economical in
equipment and operating costs. An compressed air supply and a diffuser made
from PVC pipe will suffice.

Maximum aeration can be attained by pumping the water above a medium that
will allow the water to break into a mist as it falls or to cascade the
water down a surface such as a wash board design.

If someone can add in a time factor to this discussion, it would assist in
determining some capacity requirements.

I'm not an engineer so I'm guessing at this. I think the main thing is to
create a mix of air into the water thoroughly enough that the Iron is
exposed to an aerobic condition, which is enough to create the iron oxide
precipitate. Anything that would rotate the bulk of the water in the
container through the jet in a reasonable rate of time (faster than
consumption rates) should do the trick, as long as it truly aerates the
water. I only know this through the work done by a colleague in southern
Illinois, who has left the system since. I never discussed with him the
actual equipment used.
