Hi Bob,

You guys have really suffered this season in the northeast. Looking
for options to eating the sunk costs -

Did every corn grower have the same problems? If so could you have
stripped the flag leaves and cut the top 1 1/2 to 2 inches off the
ear to get rid of the worms and raised the price enough to cover the
cost of adding this "value" for your city customers? Trimmed corn is
for sale in all the grocery stores around here. If your farmstands
are otherwise staffed, your employees could conceivably do this
before the stand opens and replenish during lulls.

Is there a Fall market for dried stalks as decoration? Do you have
access to blanching and freezing facilities for that type of product
and the ability to hold it? Can you get some gleaners in to pick
what isn't saleable for the food bank and estimate the loss for your
taxes?

Did you have access to non-insured crop insurance through your local
FSA office? This type of insurance requires some rigorous
recordkeeping and timely reporting of losses but can really help in
years like this one. All specialty crop growers should be aware of
this program and use it to the extent it is available in their county.

Looking for creative ways to cut your losses...

Marcie
