Aliza, You are right. I wish that every gardener and farmer would make a demonstration bed by marking off a 6 ft x X ft long bed and practice no-till in order to see what happens. There is unlimited, documented proof it works. Read Ruth Stout's books. Watch her video. No one plows the forest; plows the jungle. They do real well. The plant nutrients in the soil is just like a bank account; keep writing checks and soon you are out of funds; keep growing crops; soon you are out of nutrients.

Didnt they talk about tilling the green manure crop in? I thought it was better to cut it and let it lay on top instead of stirring up that precious 6" on top. And of course doing it before it reseeds:o)Aliza----- Original Message -----From: Dieter BrandSent: Friday, October 05, 2007 11:13 AMSubject: Re: [Livingontheland] Cover crops benefit everyones soilDean,The way I understand it is that cover crops are the precondition for no-tillfarming. Obviously, you need to cut the cover crop before the seeds set, unless you want it to reseed itself.Dieter BrandHow do cover crops reconcile with no till practices? We tried them one year
and harvested cover crop for the next few years.
