It's also reinforced by the intensive work of Ecology Action (Jeavons).  Compost and/or mulch plus crop rotation with legumes.

With this in mind, the old-timers always said to not use manure in pea
growing areas. That goes to support the no-added-nitrogen suggestion.

 Peas do not need Nitrates of any kind, being as they are legumes and fix
their own nitrogen into the soil.
 years ago I had started a pea in a pot, and it was doing fine till I
watered it with some water with rapid Grow added to it, It dies really fast.

Too much Nitrogen, though I didn't know that at the time.
