I've talked to both a good deal, and it's amazing
that two such different personalities arrived at much the same
conclusions. They even managed to collaborate on a few books. One
good thing: Their different styles allow them to address a wider
audience. Relatively speaking, Garrett is the city slicker (Dallas) and
Beck is the good ol' boy (San Antonio). As far as I know, they're both
self-taught, but it could hardly be otherwise, as they developed their
philosophies at a time when institutions were actively opposing any sustainable
farming or gardening.
I love to make connections, so it was interesting
to learn about this web:
Mike Shoup established the Antique Rose Emporium
near Brenham (my home town).
Malcolm Beck established Garden-Ville in NW San
Antonio, and later sold some of his land to establish a San Antonio Antique Rose
Emporium, next door to his operation. Henry Flowers
worked for Mike Shoup to set up the new operation.
Madeline Hill (renowned herb authority) established
Hilltop Herb Farm in Cleveland, TX in the '60s, and later moved to the
International Festival Institute at Round Top ( world-class music
facility), to become Curator of the gardens. Henry
Flowers is now the Horticulturist for Festival Hill.
Malcolm sold his Garden-Ville company to Texas
Disposal Systems, who are doing a tremendous job of converting Austin's and
San Antonio's waste to compost.
