Oh, I'm sure I can think of a lot more things worse that watering astroturf fields.

I think this is getting blown way out of proportion. After all, it's not like they are watering it to make it grow, or to make it prettier; the fact is that dry astroturf is about as yielding as concrete. If you want to have collegiate sports on astroturf, is must be watered heavily. I bet they are also putting water into their swimming pools.

So it is more a question of what sacrifices to make in lieu of the drought. We wouldn't deny water to patients in a hospital, but we would easily deny someone water to wash a minivan. We will deny people the ability to use public water for watering their landscaping, but we will allow nurseries to continue to water their stock.

By banning watering on thousands of lawns, it has a much greater impact than, say, asking Duke and UNC to stop certain collegiate sports. If there are, say, 80 days of water left in Durham, then having Duke stop watering their playing fields results in 80 days and perhaps a minute of water left.

"Watering Astroturf" makes a great headline, but it isn't the real story.
