The truth about most "surge protectors" is that they cannot stop lightening.
Even very advanced protection cannot fully protect against lightning. I
still use it because it does work against normal surges and they have
insurance policies you can sometimes get to pay for the damaged gear.
A friend of mine once had lighting hit near his house, run into the house
over the phone line and through his lightning arrestor. At some point it
melted the wires and jumped out to hit him and knock him across the room.
Needless to say it took every piece of computer equipment with it despite
the gear he had to stop that.
But buy a good one with a good warranty and insurance policy...like the
monster stuff.

I had a digital C-band system a few years ago and the 4DTV unit got
fried by a lightening strike. I went to Best Buy and bought a $70
monster surge protector, but it caused a lot of artifacts on the
digital channels.
I asked Monster about it and they sent me (free of charge) a $200
surge protector which I still use. So it really does depend on what
you are willing to spend (and I still buy Monster products because of
that experience).
