For anybody on Windows, I'll throw in another vote for Cool Edit Pro... we used it
at one of my old jobs for editing voice files and what-not, and it works very well.
And I recall the price being fairly reasonable (or we would never have gotten
a license).

Never used Audacity, sounds like it's worth a first look since it's free. If it
turns out to be inadequate for any reason, check out Cool Edit Pro. I'm
pretty sure they have a trial version you can download and play with.
