If you are really looking for US made, "fair trade" clothes, you will
probably want to shop at more high-end or locally-owned stores, as many
of the few US textile mills that are still in business have converted
over to specialty goods production. They just couldn't keep up with
Wal-Mart's demanded cost margins for everyday goods, and still meet US
basic labor law requirements (like, oh, minimum wage, company-sponsored
health care, and unemployment funds). Sad, but true. Welcome to "free
trade."
Try REI or Campmor - outdoor companies tend toward the eco-friendly,
fair-labor trade, like Patagonia.
Some links to consider:
http://www.americanapparel.net/ -- "Made in downtown LA - sweatshop
free"
http://www.unionwear.com/ -- "Unionwear UNITE Label Union Made in
USA"
http://www.buyamerican.com/ and http://www.buyamericanmart.com/
and my personal favorite,
http://www.treehugger.com/ -- "the future is green. find it here."
Treehugger is where I found out about such lovelies as Loomstate
(http://www.loomstate.org/) jeans - 100% organic cotton.
Or there's http://www.gaiam.com/ aka http://www.realgoods.com/ , if
you are all about the hippie green.
