I don't know the current laptop market out there, but four years ago when I
was shopping around for my first laptop, the first generation "icebook"
(which is the current form factor) was the reason I switched from Windows to
Mac and I'm still very happy with my choice.

Friends who have bought Windows laptops in recent years seem to be happiest
with an IBM or Toshiba but I can't offer any specific benefits. If you look
at online forums where people comment about technology products, always keep
in mind that: (a) every company makes a few lemons, and that (b) the owners
of those generally-rare exceptions are the most likely to be pissed off
enough to share their opinions about the products. I don't put much stock in
the theory that (c) those lemons would keep those customers from finding
another way onto the internet to share their stories.
