Hey Tom
I don't know much about the military.  He is in the Army and it was not Rangers or any special forces.  I do know that it was some sort of pilot program in which they spent 12 days in the field as opposed to the usual 5 (I believe those were the numbers anyway).

Man those numbers sound weird.  I've never heard of a basic training that fails over 50 percent of the class.  What branch did he join and is he trying for something a little more selective like Rangers or SEALS?

Another interpretation of that datum is that the military _is_ having
trouble recruiting _qualified_ volunteers, which supports the idea that
a skills-selective draft may be just what they would need.
