Since the toplic seems to have wandered into smart, on-line appliances...

One of the ideas I've kicked around is a smart trash can or garbage compactor. It would have a bar code reader that would scan UPC codes for products you were done with and wanted to throw away. It would check to see if there were special disposal instructions for the product, such as special handling for hazardous materials, packaging that could be recycled or even promotions related to proof-of-purchase emblems on the box. If special handling was appropriate it would provide instructions and contact information for processors in your area and, if there was no special handling, you could confidently chuck the item in the can.

I have a number of rusty cans of this-and-that in my garage and garden shed that I would have thrown away years ago if I wasn't a bit intimidated by the process.
