I use a Cannon PowerShot S200, and the only complaint I have about it is
the fact that the flash *always* produces red-eye. However, it's got
low-light settings out the wazoo so I end up never using the flash anyway.
(see http://www.cowfarm.org/~jcarr all the pictures there were taken with
that camera, but the best ones are the more recent ones I haven't bothered
to post yet where I actually knew how to operate the camera).

It has a macro mode which I've used, and it works very well. I think the
extent of the optical zoom is 70mm, which in my opinion is limiting.
I've thought you needed at least 100mm to take a decent portrait. The
battery life is good enough for any all day event.

I find the integration with iPhoto to be primo, but if you use their
software on Windows there's actually some really kewl shit, like it
records *exactly* the camera settings for every picture you take, like an
automated shot log, so you can go back and critique the result and get an
idea that maybe you should do something different the next time.

The camera does not have a manual focus, but I've never found a situation
where I wanted one. The autofocus usually understands where it ought to
go pretty well. You're also limited to setting exposure times over 1
second. That is, you don't have any control under one second exposures.

I think as you get into more SLR style features, like manual focus, you're
going to get out of your price range really quickly.

Anyway, here's a *great* review site: http://www.dcresource.com/
