FWIW, How Stuff Works has a pretty decent writeup (complete with annoying
ad popups!) of the power grid, transformers, and so forth, for those who
were curious about how a blown transformer affected them in the storm:

I was hoping for more info on the actual makeup of transformers, as I was
curious whether they still used PCBs, and why, but this is still a good
overview. I knew they worked by mutual induction, more about which below:
