David,

I thoroughly enjoyed your post, and in essence agree with most everything
you said. I don't have a degree in automotive technology nor have I worked
as a mechanic, but I have been reading car mags as long as I can remember
and still read way too many of them.

About the following:

> > A no-no kind of car is a car running Microsoft WindowsCE, like those
> > pesky Mercedes. (it would be incompatible with my RedHat sticker).

> and Josep, i think it is the new BMW 7-series that runs on WinCE.

Yes, that new 7-series with that bizarre and highly questionable 'iDrive'
does qualify for 'computer on wheels o' the year' award (also, beautiful car
except for that gawdawful trunklid - what on earth were they smoking when
they came up with that??!!??), but there was a reference in the most recent
'Auto Week' that does justify thinking certain Mercedes models as being
powered by Windows CE:

http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port_code=autoweek&cat_code=carboard&;
loc_code=index&content_code=04093559

"Both cars developed the same problem, though: intermittent transmission
electronic faults that shut down the sportshift function. Turning the
ignition off and "rebooting" the car sometimes helps. A scary thought:
Mercedes emulating Microsoft. Maybe it would be better off mimicking those
quick-change Audi transmissions."

For better reliability, how 'bout a Palm powered car? ;-p
