We found one on the road one day and brought it home to try and save it. Sweetest little thing in the world. Must have known we were trying to help. Curled up in youngest lap and would follow her all over the house. Think it had internal injuries, maybe hit by a car. It would drink and try to eat but only wanted to be held. Poor little guy died two days later. I'll have to post some pictures.

Speaking of animal babies...
A few days ago, a limb from our mature sweetgum fell. Since then, I've been hearing baby calls. I thought it was a bird until yesterday, when my super puppy Bingo (Awesome Aussie) found a baby squirrel near the tree. It was a female, and it appeared to have a cleft palate. I came inside and found a good site online and learned that sometimes squirrels fall head first and injure their mouths, so anyway I think that is what happened to her as she was bleeding a bit. She was thin and weak, and despite my best efforts, she died yesterday afternoon. This morning, I found another baby-in the chicken moat of all places(it is near the fallen limb)-, this time a wiley young male who must have been the pig of the litter because girth wise he is twice the size of his sister. This little dude is active and hungry. I've determined by the aging guide on that website that they are right at 4 weeks old, and should be opening their eyes any day now. So now I am syringe feeding (really, at this point it is just rehydrating the little beast) Rocky. What other name could you give a gray squirrel who has such a rough start in life on Rock Creek? I'm hoping that I can warm Rocky up and keep him alive, but who knows. Life is a 'rocky' journey.
Here is the website I am using as a guide:
