The complete text is at the website for Bush Sr.'s presidential library:
http://bushlibrary.tamu.edu/research/public_papers.php?id=3450&year=1991&month=10

I think that Obama is very different than any president we've ever had. His ways of doing things are different. His entire staff is different, and runs the White House differently...very New Age, with tweets and everything on the internet. A lot of people don't like 'different' and are afraid of 'change', but Obama's style obviously resonates with many (younger?) people.

I wonder about people's reaction to 'socialism'. We have a lot of socialized systems in this country that work fine...Social Security, Medicare, roads, airports,VA hospitals, etc. I remember when Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers, and socialized control of them, and, therefore, the airports. There was a fuss, but I don't remember him being called a 'socialist'.

I'm not comfortable with Obama's methods or his policies, but then I've never agreed much with any president or the way he ran the country. I especially don't like Obama's advisors...Bush was in bed with Big Oil, Obama is in bed with Big Finance. But he was fairly elected with a mandate of 'change', so I'm willing to give him a chance.

Lynn, where did you find Bush Sr's speech?

I'm glad they've decided to make the text of the speech available ahead of
time. Maybe that will calm some parents' concerns. Some Americans, I
think, have been made very nervoius by Obama's campaign/administration.
Many were concerned by adulation of a political candidate that seemed
seriously inappropriate. Also a concern to many were the Marxist-style
posters, Greek columns, etc. The serious steps of taking (at some level)
control of certain financial institutions and car companies shocked many.
Even if each of these items (and others of concern) can be explained as
benign/necessary, they were unsettling events. Some Americans think that if
all these things can happen in such a short amount of time, what else can
happen? And, I think, listening/watching to certain talk shows exacerbates
concerns
Didn't vote for Bush, didn't vote for Obama. I've been throwing away my
vote for decades.

I read the original, and they changed the one line about writing down what
you can do to "help the president" (which Obama lifted directly from Bush
Sr.'s speech). People went ballistic over the idea that children should be
asked to help the president (wonder if people objected when Bush Sr. said
it?), so they changed it to the line about setting short-term and long-term
goals.
