Rob; the weather in northern PA has been phenominally warm and pleasant (with a couple of cold spells) for this early in the spring. I've gotten most of my beds prepared. I finally planted out my lettuce, Chinese cabbage, onions (I always grow Ailsa Craig, too, and Walla Walla this year), leeks, and potatoes. I hope winter doesn't decide to make a comeback. If it stays nice, I'll be tempted to put out my early tomatoes under plastic earlier than I'd planned.

Subject: [Homestead] Garden on the mind
Glad to see some posts. I'm sure everyone has been busy. I like that about
spring. Time to get shaking and get some work done. What I do in spring sets
the tone for the rest of the year.
There are lots of little sunflowers coming up everywhere from seed that the
birds dropped, I'm letting a few well placed ones grow.
I outlined the herb plot with Jerusalem Artichokes. I'm sure I'll regret
that some day!
The chamomile reseeded itself. I lost the rosemary to cold. I see arugula
coming up very late. Also have some creasy salad coming up and some spinach
mustard. It might be a productive little plot. I also planted a nice little
spot of Alfalfa. I want it for tea.
I planted out my onions I grew from seed today. I planted some other starts
and sets I'd bought. Mental note to plant onion seed on New Years Day 2010.
I counted 180 Ailsa Craig plants. That's my heirloom. I hope it does well,
I'd like to save seed. I planted probably 100 Candy onions, I've planted
that hybrid for 3 years and it always makes nice onions.
It's been so rainy here, I just had yesterday and today to get in the
garden. It's been on the cool side, hard frost last week, but I was
surprised at how warm the soil is. Those whippoorwills must know what they
are doing, they are back.
