Pennyroyal is toxic if used in excess (5g or more). It has been used since at least 1 AD (at least that is the first recorded use of it) for women's ailments, venomous bites, and digestion. European settlers were surprised to find the plant here and continued to use the plant for respiratory ailments, mouth sores, and female disorders. It is great for getting rid of fleas, both by powdering the dried leaves and scattering them around the foundation of your house and using the oils in a flea bath. The plant got a bad rap when it started being used as an abortive and, as usual, folks decided if a little was good, more was better. Well, "more" results in death. The oil and infusions have been used in the treatment of weakness and stomach pains.

Most natural insect repellents are made with an essential oil
distilled from citronella, a tall, aromatic grass indigenous to
Southern Asia. Its pungent, lemony fragrance is pleasant to most
people but objectionable to mosquitoes. Other aromatic essential oils
commonly found in natural insect repellents include cedarwood,
lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, pennyroyal, lavender, and bergamot.
These are safe when applied to the skin, but should not be taken
internally without the advice of a professional. Pennyroyal, in
particular, is highly toxic if ingested.
